Discover Playa Flamenca

Playa Flamenca is part of Orihuela Costa. This popular beach resort is approximately 7.5 km from the city of Torrevieja. It is a lively destination where a large number of expatriates live. This means that many nationalities have influenced the area.

Its origins

Many construction contractors from Flanders, Belgium, came to this region in the 1980s. Many new build projects were constructed and the urbanisation was given a name. Since the projects where on the beach (playa in Spanish) and the construction contractors were Flemish (flamenca in Spanish), these two Spanish words were used.

Playa Flamenca is subdivided into two parts: Playa Flamenca I and Playa Flamenca II.

These days, it is a destination sought out by many. Many British and German people have a second home here, but during the past few years many Belgians, French, Scandinavians, etc. have found their personal paradise here under the Spanish sun.

Vitamin Sea

The ‘Cala Mosca’ is a small but pleasant bay that is protected by rocky walls on both sides. You immediately feel protected. ‘Cala Mosca’ is linked to the neighbouring ‘Cala Estaca’ through the coastal promenade. This promenade can also be easily recognised by the sundial that is depicted there.

The ‘Cala Estaca’ is a calm natural bay with fine golden sand. The area has a handful of bars and restaurants. This beach has all types of facilities. There are, for example, lifeguards and a chiringuito or beach bar and recliners and parasols can be hired during the summer. There is also sufficient parking facility and a diversity of fitness equipment. ‘Cala Estaca’ is also a blue flag beach.

Sports

Sporting aficionados will find much that they will enjoy in Playa Flamenca. It is where the municipal sports centre (Centro Deportivo Municipal) of Orihuela Costa can be found.

The centre that was opened in 2010 is on Calle Niagara 23. It has no less than 24,000 m2 of sporting facilities such as a covered and heated swimming pool, 3 paddle tennis courts, 2 tennis courts, 2 multipurpose fields (basketball, volleyball, handball, etc.), several football pitches, a multipurpose room (indoor football, Zumba, Pilates, etc.) and a 550 m long athletics track.

It also, of course, has a place to grab a coffee with a terrace, green area, changing rooms, reception, etc.

Relaxation and leisure

There are different shopping centres spread across Playa Flamenca. They offer a range of outlets but all have bars, restaurants, shops and a supermarket.

The weekly market is also very popular. You can go to Calle Nicolás de Bussi every Saturday during the morning. You will find a large range of fresh vegetables and fruit at this market. They also sell clothing, shoes, leather goods and delicious roast chicken!
