The town

The historic centre of Calpe (Calp), has been very well preserved. Small, pleasant streets that come out on squares, old classic buildings, traditional fisherman’s cottages, a church built in the Gothic style and numerous shops make strolling in the town centre a real pleasure.

If you are considering a visit, we recommend Saturday. Then the weekly market is open with its wide range of fresh vegetables, fruit, clothing, etc.

After, you can enjoy a delicious tapa and a glass of Rioja. What else does a person need?

History

Throughout a period of 20 centuries, the Romans, Iberians as well as Moors have settled in this fantastic region. For this reason, Calpe has a very rich history and it is simply bursting with culture.

In the 19th and 20th centuries, the town grew through a flourishing economy that was the result of fishing and salt mining. Around 1950, the first tourists came to explore and, in the past decades, Calpe has become a real tourist attraction.

El Peñon de Ifach

El Peñon de Ifach is symbolic of Calpe. This tall (+/- 330 m) limestone can be seen from many kilometres away. There are various hiking trails that start in the marina and, once you reach the top, you are rewarded with an incredible view.

This is not only a hotspot for humans. De Peñon de Ifach has unique fauna and flora. Birds especially like to stay here.

Sand between your toes

Calpe has a wide range of beautiful beaches with crystal clear water.

‘Playa Levante’ and ‘Playa Arenal’ are the most popular beaches of Calpe. It is also wonderful to relax on the ‘Playa de Puerto Blanca’ or ‘Playa les Urgues’ close to the marina.

Divers can have a great time on ‘Cala Gasperet’ and ‘Playa El Collao’. These beaches can only be reached by sea.

Las Salinas de Calpe

In the centre of the town, in the middle of the apartments and the road, lies the old salt mine ‘Las Salinas’. Salt is no longer mined today, and Las Salinas is mainly an attraction for flamingos.
