Biggest increase of construction in Spain

The EU statistics office, Eurostat, reported last week that, during the month of September, Spain’s construction activity grew by 6.1% year-on-year, the second largest increase in the Eurozone, which in overall terms declined by 0.2%.

The highest declines in construction activity were registered in countries such as Portugal (-14.9%), the Czech Republic (-11.8%), Slovenia (-7.9%) and Italy (-6.1%), while the increases were lead by Hungary (+9.3%), Spain (+6.1%) and the United Kingdom (+4.6%).

Month-on-month, September over August, the Eurozone registered a decline in construction activity of 1.3% compared with the previous month, while in Spain construction grew by 0.3%.

El Mundo reported that, in the EU as a whole, the construction industry also fell by 1.3% in September compared with August, when it rose by two tenths, while year-on-year it registered an increase of 0.2%.

Among the countries for which data are available for September 2013, the construction output rose in six and fell in nine compared to the previous month.

The biggest increases were registered in Slovenia (+6.2%), Slovakia (+1.6%) and Hungary (0.8%), while the steepest declines occurred in Portugal (-12.3%), Romania (-6.9%) and the Czech Republic (-4.6%).
