What’s in a name?
The name Benissa has its origin in the Arab language. ‘Ben Isa’ means ‘son of Isa’. Many villages and cities on the Costa Blanca that begin with ‘Beni’ are witnesses to the impact of the Moorish culture on this region.
Culture
Benissa is small but has many assets. ‘La Marina Alta’ is a large white cathedral that was built at the beginning of the 20th century commissioned by rich freemasons. Being located in the middle of the center, it is the symbol of Benissa.
In addition to the cathedral, Plaza de la Iglesia and Plaza Rey Jaume I (squares), you can go and view the different houses with wrought-iron work and family shields of noble families.
The ‘Lonja’ (the trade building), dating from the 16th century, a hospital for the poor, the Ribero monument, the Casa de la Cultura or the Juan Vives house, where the portrait of La Purissima Xiqueta (patron saint) complete the cultural aspect.
Benissa beach
Although Benissa is located in the interior, it has a 4-km-long coastline. It has various small, hidden bays. Several sand beaches, such as the ‘Els Pinets’ and the ‘La Caleta la Fustera’, are part of this town.
Surroundings
The mountains and valleys of the landscape are covered with orchards because of the Mediterranean climate. It is an idyllic area where it is wonderful to stay. We certainly recommend walking through the many small narrow streets or through the Jalon Vallei (Alcalali)!
