Discover Denia!
Denia has a rich history. This can be seen while wandering through the narrow, Moorish streets that twist through and around the center.
Despite the many hotels and apartment complexes, Denia does not look very convincing as a tourist location. There is a perfectly balanced relationship between that which is authentic and that which is touristy.
A good example of this can be found next to the harbour. In the traditional fishing district, ‘Balx la Mar’, you can enjoy the sight of beautifully coloured fisherman’s cottages, where it is possible today to dine in one of the many restaurants.
Culture of Denia
The biggest attraction of Denia is without a doubt ‘El Castillo’. As the name suggests, this is a castle. It was originally built between the 11th and 12th centuries, which gave it an Islamic style.
The castle was destroyed for the most part in 1859 but was later fully restored. It is through these activities that you can recognize the Renaissance influence.
When visiting, you can also stop in at the Archaeological Museum located on the castle’s grounds. This museum houses archaeological remains of the Roman settlement ‘Diannium’ that were found in the area.
Denia holds festivals throughout the year the origin of which can be found in the Catholic faith. They begin with the procession of the Three Wise Men (05/01) and go until the pilgrimage to the hermitage of Saint Lucia (13/12).
In July there is the annual ‘Bous a la Mar’. A bull is let loose in a temporary arena to be lured to the sea by men and women. Besides, the idea is to get the bull into the water without getting yourself wet (or wounded).
Relaxation in Denia
Feel like a beach day? Different, beautiful sandy beaches extend around the town. These have also been awarded Blue Flag as recognized as clean beaches by the EU.
In the north, it is possible to visit the sandy Punta del Raset, Les Marines, Les Bovetes and Els Molins beaches.
To the south, we will find the sandy Las Marinas Caslana beach, but beyond this, the landscape becomes rougher. Las Rotas can be found there, a succession of rocky bays, and Cabo San Antonio (cliffs).
The latter is to be recommended for diving and snorkeling.
Have you searched for culinary delights before? Denia has 2 food markets, the market hall (Mercado Municipal) and the fish market (Lonja de Pescado). It is here that you can buy fresh fish, fruit, olives, etc., to dine with the entire family.
Montgó
Next to the town, there is a rather large mountain, which is the Montgó. It forms a natural separation from the town of Javea. This mountain allows you to enjoy fantastic views of the sea and the surrounding cities. Furthermore, sports fanatics can challenge the mountain by using one of the many hiking routes.
